EMDR Surrey
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or held back by difficult experiences, EMDR therapy
can offer an effective way forward. EMDR is an evidence-based approach that helps
adults process trauma, anxiety, and long-standing emotional difficulties in a safe and
supportive way. Many people find EMDR especially helpful when they’ve tried other
approaches but still feel impacted by memories or feelings that continue to resurface.
I offer EMDR sessions in person in Surrey/Guildford, as well as online EMDR therapy
across the UK, making it easy to access support in a way that works for you. My aim is to
create a calm, compassionate space where you can work at your own pace and begin to
feel more grounded, resilient, and regulated.
If you’re ready to book your first EMDR session or would like to find out more, I offer a free
15-minute consultation on Microsoft Teams. Please visit my contact page to get in touch.

What Is EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)
EMDR is an evidence-based therapeutic approach designed to help people heal from
difficult or distressing experiences that continue to impact them in the present. EMDR
supports your brain in naturally and adaptively processing unresolved memories, so they
no longer trigger the same distressing emotional or physical reactions.
During EMDR, we use gentle bilateral stimulation such as eye movements or tapping to
help the brain reprocess distressing memories in a safe and contained way. This allows
you to gradually feel calmer, more grounded, and more in control.
EMDR is widely used to support adults experiencing trauma, anxiety, low self-esteem, or the ongoing effects of past experiences that continue to impact everyday life. It is a structured, compassionate, and highly effective approach that helps many people move forward with newly
discovered confidence and with resilience.

What Happens in EMDR?
During EMDR sessions, we will work together in a structured but collaborative way to
help you process difficult memories and reduce the emotional intensity surrounding
them. EMDR sessions follow a clear eight-phase framework, but the pace is always
guided by you. We explore what feels manageable, identify the experiences that are still
affecting you, and use gentle bilateral stimulation to help your brain reprocess these
memories. We move step by step, checking in regularly to ensure the process feels
steady and contained.
Following an assessment, we will practice practical techniques such as resourcing,
stabilisation, and coping strategies that you can use between sessions. Clients tell me
appreciate how collaborative the process is and how EMDR allows them to make
meaningful progress without needing to revisit everything in detail.
Clients can choose whether to have sessions with me online or in person, Online therapy
offers additional flexibility for those who prefer this modality while in-person EMDR in
Surrey provides a calm, grounding space for those who prefer face-to-face support.

Who Can Benefit from EMDR?
EMDR can be a powerful and transformative approach for adults who feel held back by
past experiences or overwhelming emotions. It is especially helpful for people who know
something in their past is still affecting their present, whether that shows up in the form of
anxiety, low self-esteem, distressing memories, or difficulty feeling safe and grounded.
I particularly enjoy using EMDR to help adults who have experienced trauma or PTSD,
who struggle with anxiety or persistent worry, describe the lasting effects of difficulties in
childhood or relational trauma, or find themselves repeating unhelpful patterns in day-to-
day life. EMDR is also beneficial for those experiencing low self-worth, harsh self-
criticism, or emotional overwhelm, and for adults who have tried other therapies but still
experience ongoing difficulties.
EMDR works with people from all backgrounds and at all stages of life. Whether you’re
dealing with a single distressing event or many years of unresolved experiences, EMDR
offers an effective way to move toward greater resilience, and emotional wellbeing.
For Anxiety and Stress and Trauma
EMDR can be highly effective for adults struggling with anxiety, stress, or the lasting
effects of trauma. By helping the brain reprocess past experiences that may be
contributing to anxious thoughts, emotional tension, or trauma-related distress, EMDR
reduces the intensity of these responses and creates space for calmer, more balanced
thinking. Many clients notice that triggers feel less overwhelming, memories feel less
distressing, and they are better able to cope with everyday challenges after EMDR
sessions.

For Low Mood and Depression
EMDR can help adults experiencing low mood or depression by addressing unresolved
experiences or negative beliefs that may be contributing to persistent sadness, self-
criticism, or feelings of hopelessness. Through reprocessing these memories in a safe
and structured way, EMDR can reduce their emotional impact, helping clients feel lighter
and more able to engage fully with life. Many adults find that EMDR supports them in
breaking unhelpful patterns in their day to day life and in rediscovering a sense of
motivation, confidence, and resilience.

FAQ’s around EMDR

How long does EMDR take?
Everyone is different, following a detailed assessment, but many people notice an
improvement within 12 sessions. Complex trauma or long-term difficulties may take
longer.

Will I have to talk about my trauma in detail?
EMDR allows the brain to process memories without needing to go into every detail. You
remain in control throughout the process.

Is EMDR safe?
Yes. EMDR is considered safe and effective when delivered by a trained EMDR therapist.
Some people may experience temporary strong emotions or vivid dreams between
sessions, but you will be guided and support you through the process.

How will I feel after a session?
People often feel:
-
lighter or calmer
-
tired
-
reflective
-
temporarily more emotional
These reactions are normal and usually settle within a day or two.

Is EMDR suitable for everyone?
Most people can benefit, but EMDR may not be appropriate if someone is currently very
unstable or unable to stay grounded. We will assess whether EMDR is right for you, and
may begin with stabilisation work first.
